18" Vintage Lead Guitar Speakers by CTS
|
(ebay item # 1505984389, posted 1/23/02, SOLD 2/1/02)
Are
you looking for that classic vintage 70's tone?!? Do you want it to be
heard? Then these speakers are for you! Two mint condition vintage 18"
guitar (possibly bass, although they don't move much!) speakers made by
Chicago Telephony and Switching in 1967. The specs are as follows:
- Model: BG-80
- Sequentially serial numbered!
- 8 ohm each
- ~150 watts peak each
- 18 lbs each
- Heavy Aluminum frame
- 2.013" Voice coil, 4-layer Kapton.
- 6"x6"x3/4" square strontium magnet
- Heavy paper cone
- Treated paper surround
- Porous cloth dustcap
These
were purchased from McGee Radio Company in Kansas City in April, 1973.
They were NEVER USED, but have a short piece of speaker wire soldered to
them that was used to test them in 1973. They have been in storage in a
dry, cool basement since then and have NO cone warping, scratches, dings
or other aberrations on the cones. The aluminum frames have no corrosion,
scratches, or dings in them. Aluminum is not magnetic, so none of the
magnetic field intended for the voice coil gets pulled away from the
voice coil, like it does in a steel framed speaker. There is a 0.2" rust
spot on the back of the steel plate on speaker #1 which can be easily
cleaned off (see below), but there is no other rust anywhere! The bolts
on the magnet plates have a yellowish dust on them, but it can easily be
cleaned off and will not affect the sound. They are in their ORIGINAL
boxes with the original shipping stickers on them. The boxes are dusty on
the outside, but perfectly clean on the inside.

- These speakers both have the following printed on the magnet plate:
Custom Design
by CTS
BG-80
137 - 745
- Both cones have "1802-1" printed on them.
- The date code is 137 - 745, "137" is for CTS (Jensen was
"220"), "7" is the second digit of the year (1967), and "45" is the 45th
week.
- The speakers do not seem to have a serial number on them, but
the boxes do. The boxes say: "SPEC: 5818006" and "SPEC: 5818007".
- The shipping for these speakers: I visited UPS.com and estimated $60
for the pair by ground service. The cost will probably be a little less
if you live in the north-east USA.
